Total Knee Replacement

The knee is a joint made up of three femurs (femur), tibia (patella) and patella (patella). The knee joint is surrounded by a joint capsule, the synovial membrane (containing synovial fluid) and ligaments.

Bottom edges of the femur: The curves of the femoral metal components enclose the end of the femur. This part is grooved, so the patella can move up and down gently, despite the flexion and straightening of the bone.

Upper tibia: Tibial components are typically a flat metal insole with a solid, durable plastic structure called polyethylene. Some designs do not have a metal part and the polyethylene is attached directly to the bone. For greater stability, the metal portion may have a sequence that inserts into the center of the tibia.

Patella dorsal surface: Patellar components are a dome-shaped piece of polyethylene that takes the shape of a patella.
